I am an elementary music educator and have used Tangrams in the music room, relating it to Science, the number 7 ( 7 shapes in the Tangram, 7 colors in the rainbow, 7 named notes in music (A, B, C, D, E, F and G). I've used Tangram puzzles, first to let the kids learn how to do them by giving them a set of tangrams as they come in the door and they try to make the pattern I've put on the wall. After a few minutes, if they can't do it, they come get a sheet with the tangram shaped drawn so they can lay it on top of it or next to it. After a few weeks of this (I see them once a week), we then read a story (Tikki Tikki Tembo)and decide on the tangram characters, then make shadow puppets. We also make up music for the story, dances, add characters, narrators and other assorted things like a dragon and butterfly with color pieces in them.
Recently, I found another book, which shows Tangrams (as you know), Grandfather Tang's Story. I will be presenting it to my students, but also to other music teachers in the state of FL at the State Music In-service Conference, in January, 2013.
QUESTION: The comment at the end of the blog signed by Grandfather Tang. . . I don't understand. Please clarify that comment.
If you have come up with any additional comments, things you have observed, etc. even though your project is long finished, could you please email any thoughts to me quickly.
Notes are being written now. Presentation will be Thursday, January 10th in Tampa. (I will be printing the notes on Monday, Jan. 7th when we return to school.).
